Amena Gum

Age 64, of Hobart, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021. Amena is survived by her loving children, Melissa (Brad) Huffman, Philip (Nicole) Topor, and Brennan Gum; grandchildren: Antonio Rodriguez, Ava Huffman, Gracie Huffman, and Leah Topor; siblings Phillip (Juanita) Gum, Robert Gum, and Marlena (Ray) Arnold; as well as nieces and nephews; Justin, Katelyn, Brandon, Tyler, Desiray, Jim, and Ben. Preceded by her mother Dorothy Szczygiel; father Benjamin Szczygiel, and brother Jimmel Gum.

Amena was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana where she was later a graduate of Washington High School. As a single mother, Amena not only worked full-time but also earned her Master's Degree from Davenport University.

She was a talented seamstress who created wardrobes for various plays including the coat she crafted for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

As a double cancer survivor, Amena was a beacon of strength, and continued to work full-time while receiving treatment. She had a beautiful smile, and an infectious laugh. Amena surrounded herself with only genuine and loyal people.  She continued a legacy of strong family values instilled in her by her mother and father. Amena enjoyed music and spending time with her family.  She was a very loving mother that always made a way for her kids. She adored her children and grandchildren and will be missed dearly.

Amena passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Amena will be laid to rest alongside her loving mother, and brother.

A Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM– 12:00 PM on Monday, November 1, 2021 at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM with Edward Shabaz officiating. Burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, Indiana.
