Barney J. Swinford

Barney J. Swinford, of Highland, IN, passed away at the age of 83 at home with his family on Sunday, February 18, 2024. He was a longtime resident of Highland. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Kathy (nee Abraham) Swinford; daughters Debra (late, Mike) Swinford-Allender; Cindy (James) Rodgers, Linda (Joe) Kartje. He was the proud grandfather of Christopher Swinford, Jenna (John) Gensic, Joseph R. Kartje, Benjamin (Lindsay) Kartje, Zachary (Kirstie) Kartje, Alexa and Sophia Kartje; great-grandchildren: Mikan, Anica, Drexler, Finley Gensic, Noah and Neil Kartje; sisters: Brenda (late, Mike) Williams, Betty (Bob) Williamson; brothers, Barry (Eleonore) Swinford and Bruce (Mary Ann) Swinford. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Edna Swinford; sisters, Beverly (Crane) Swinford, Bonnie (Swinford) Tatge; and brother Billy Swinford.
Barney's commitment to the betterment of Highland was demonstrated through his extensive involvement in various civic organizations. As a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus and Lions Club, Barney represented the values of brotherhood, charity, and community service.
For over 25 years, he selflessly served alongside his fellow firefighters with the Highland Fire Department, demonstrating courage and leadership. His tenure as Chief from 1985-1988 marked a period of exceptional dedication and innovation. In addition, Barney also served as Highland's Police Commissioner, where his commitment to justice and public safety was unwavering.
Barney was the owner of S & K Masonry for 38 years in Highland.
Beyond his civic duties, Barney found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life, including fishing and hunting. His greatest source of happiness came from spending time with his cherished family, creating memories that will endure for generations to come.
A Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Avenue, Schererville, IN. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 24, DIRECTLY at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 9640 Kennedy Ave, Highland, IN. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 10:00 AM until time of Mass. Services conclude at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Highland Police and Fire Departments.
