David A. Ramirez Sr. "Big Dave"
Age 68, of Merrillville, IN passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025. David is a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his children: David A. (Carolina) Ramirez, Jr., Corrie M. (fiancé Terry Applewhite Jr.) Ramirez, Rachel C. Ramirez, and Nicholas H. F. Ramirez grandchildren; Evelyn, Emily, Marvin Jr., Dajana, David, Aliza, David III, Mahagany, Isis, Corr 'age, Orion, Iris, Elias, Ollie-Rosa, Baby Nick and Genesis. great-grandchildren; Darien, Sophia, Mariana, Ali'Yanna, Mahlani, Messiah, Amiya, Benicio, Baby Marvin III, Zion, and Malakai. His mother; Ernestine Anguiano brother; Jesse Ramirez Sr., sister; Jacquelin Ramirez and several nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.
Preceded in death by his twin brother Daniel Ramirez Sr., sister Violet "Sam" Reyna, brother John Ramirez Jr., father, John Ramirez Sr.
David dedicated 42 years of hard work to IHB Railroad in Hammond, where he built lifelong friendships and earned the respect of many. He also proudly served his country with honor, receiving an honorable discharge from the military. After his service, David furthered his education at Indiana Tech in Hammond.
Throughout his life, David made vital and selfless changes for the sake of his family. One of the most profound decisions he made was to choose a new path-committing to his children and grandchildren with unwavering love and determination. His 31 years of recovery, supported through Northwest Indiana Serenity House '96, stands as a testament to his strength, resilience, and dedication, especially to his daughter Corrie and grandson Marvin Jr.
David would do anything for his family, always offering love without judgement. He had a passion for trains and wrestling, and his heart was truly unmatched. His dedication was impeccable, his smile could light any room, and his voice would live rent-free in the hearts of those who knew him. David was a great man all around who fought with courage until the very end. He will be deeply missed.
A Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville, IN. Services conclude at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the family would be greatly appreciated.
