Dr. Dennis Barton Pursel, MD

Age 77, of Munster, IN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2022. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Irma Pursel; dear children: Ruth (Tom) Ortiz and Christopher (Brittney) Pursel; precious grandchildren: Eddie Ortiz, Nathaniel Ortiz, Lia Ortiz, and Arya Pursel; brothers: Richard (Janet) Pursel and William "Billy" (late Jacqueline) Pursel; and many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by his son, Dennis Pursel and parents: Dennis and Mary Pursel.

Dennis was a loving, kind, and hardworking father and husband who always had a positive attitude and constantly put others first. He was a fan of watches and enjoyed tinkering with them and learning about how they worked. He was also fond of learning and reading, but his greatest and most prized passion was medicine. Dennis' perseverance earned him his Doctorate of Medicine from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and he also attended Vanderbilt University – Department of Anesthesiology. He was an outstanding ER physician for 39 years and worked at various hospitals in Illinois and Indiana, notably Community Hospital in Munster, St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, and St. Mary's Hospital in Hobart. Dennis found pleasure in traveling, especially to Mexico, and hiking. Above all else, he was a proud Christian man who adored spending time with his family, mainly his wife, children, grandchildren, and precious puppies.
