Donald Edward Johnsen, age 92, of Hammond, passed away on February 15, 2018 at Towne Centre in Merrillville. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his children: Louise Johnsen, Linda (Tom) Hoolehan, Susan (Robert) Dabrowski, Donald (Linda) Johnsen, Teresa Johnsen, Raymond (Carol) Johnsen, David Johnsen, Charles (Patricia) Johnsen, Gregory (Debbie) Johnsen, Harold Johnsen, Diane (Mike) Czaja; his sister Margaret Johnsen; his brothers Richard Johnsen and Harold Johnsen; as well as 30 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Louise Johnsen; daughter Patricia (Franco) Mazzon; brothers Robert Johnsen and Paul Johnsen; and parents Hans and Helen Johnsen.
He was a very dedicated and loving dad and loved going to big family get-togethers where he got to listen to all the stories of everyone's adventures and talk about his own adventures and the fun he had growing up by the Fox River in St. Charles, Illinois. He excelled at horseshoes and Bag-O and loved playing pretty much any game that got the kids involved.
Don was a veteran of WWII. He served in Europe from 1943 to 1946 and received a Purple Heart and the marksmanship award. During the war he learned German and served as an interpreter for his platoon.
All who knew him loved his caring thoughtfulness and will miss him always.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, February 19 th , 2018 from 2:00 – 8:00 PM at the SOLAN PRUZIN FUNERAL HOME 14 Kennedy Avenue, Schererville, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 20 th , 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. John Bosco Church 7113 Columbia Avenue, Hammond, IN. Donald will lie in repose at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of mass and will be laid to rest at St. Joseph and St. John Cemetery in Hammond, IN.
