Edna Stankovich, age 97 passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on March 1, 1920 in Bloomington, IN. to Mr. and Mrs. Alva Flynn. Edna married Joseph C. Stankovich in 1946. Joseph died in 1992 after 46 years of marriage. They were blessed with one son, Joseph J. Stankovich, Sr. and his wife, Ana J. Sila Stankovich. They had one son, Dr. Joseph J. Stankovich, Jr.
Edna is survived by her sister, Mildred Roberts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her brother, Dwight Flynn was deceased. She is survived by nieces and nephews. They are Carolyn Cowden, Keith Flynn (Nora), Joy Flynn, Kathy Gibson, Josette Patterson (Harold), Janet McCord (James), and John Roberts (Kathy).
She graduated from Bloomington High School and Indiana University Bloomington in 1943. Afterwards, she
taught in the Gary and East Chicago Schools with a total of
49 years in teaching. While teaching at Washington High School in East Chicago, she was appointed Northwest Advisor for the Future Homemakers of America by Purdue University for many years. At the De La Garza Career Center in East Chicago, IN., she was twice awarded "Teacher of the Year Award." Also, twice she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Lions Club of East Chicago, IN.
Edna lived in East Chicago for 9 years before moving to Dyer, IN. There she was an active member of Holy Trinity Croatian Catholic Church. There she joined the Home and School Association serving as President and Chairperson of the Annual Summer Festival. When she moved to Dyer, she joined St. Joseph
Catholic Church and the philanthropic National Sorority of Psi Iota Xi serving many times as Corresponding Secretary
Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home & Crematory, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville, IN. In lieu of flower memorials, contributions may be sent to the Carmelite Home for Girls, 4840 Grasselli Ave., East Chicago 46312 care of Sister Giuseppe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at St. Joseph Catholic Church 440 Joliet St Dyer, IN with Father Ted J. Mauch officiating. Edna will lie in repose at the church from 9:30 AM until time of service. Interment will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Edna will be loved and missed by her loving family and friends.
