Obituary

Emil Riccio

Age 78, of Munster, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Emil is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Janis Riccio (nee Ganz); beloved children, Josef (Helen) Riccio and Jenna Riccio; cherished grandchildren, Petar Riccio and Luci Riccio; his brothers, Benny (Carol) Riccio and Louie (Leslie) Riccio; sister, Lena (late, Michael) Storino; along with several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Carmela (nee Verta) Riccio.

Born and raised in Italy, Emil later made his home in the United States, where he attended George Washington High School on the East side of Chicago. He proudly worked as a union bricklayer until starting his successful career at North American Refractories, from where he earned his retirement. Emil also served as a CFU Trustee for the National Board Junior Tamburitzans, reflecting his dedication to service and leadership within his community.

Emil enjoyed golf and was also known for his talents as a winemaker and salumiere; making and curing homemade Italian soppressata and capicola. An avid gardener, Emil took great pride in his garden—especially his cherished fig trees. Above all else, Emil’s greatest joy was his family, particularly the time spent with his grandchildren, who brought endless pride and happiness to his life.

A Memorial Celebration will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Solan – Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave, Schererville, Indiana. A Service Celebrating Emil’s Life will take place at 7:00 PM that evening. Services conclude at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be made to the Croatian Fraternal Union Scholarship Fund: Cfu.org
