Eugene "Gene" E. Kammer

Age 90, of Hammond, formerly of Whiting, IN, was called by The Lord just shy of his 91st birthday on Thursday, January 18, 2024.  Eugene is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, LaVerne (nee Perosko); loving children, Eugene G. Kammer, William Kammer, Lynn (late, Edwin) Wilczynski; and James (Dessie) Kammer. He is preceded by his parents, Raymond and Mary Kammer; brothers: Norman and Raymond Kammer; and son-in-law, Edwin Wilczynski.

Gene was overjoyed earning the title "Papa" to 8 amazing grandchildren. Kristy (Michael) Dec, Melanie (Bryce) Hlista, Julia (Anthony) Affinati, James (Courtney) Rash, Brianna Cooper, Hayden, Jordan, and Greyson Kammer.  Gene was blessed to be the great grandfather of 5 wonderful great grandchildren: Tyler, Brandon, Blake, Carter, and Myles.  He had many nephews and nieces he cherished deeply.

Eugene was a 1951 graduate of George Rogers Clark High School. He was an Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. Eugene was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church as an usher and co-running the church bingo. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Eugene worked for Standard Oil and then went on to retire as a supervisor from NIPSCO.  In his retirement years, Eugene enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, playing Keno and running the local bingos in Hammond.  He was an avid football watcher and particularly enjoyed following his favorite football team the Kansas City Chiefs. He left a lasting impression on the lives of those he touched.  He was a loving Husband, father, and grandfather that will be dearly missed and cherished.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville, IN.  A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 26, 2024, DIRECTLY AT Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7132 Arizona Ave, Hammond, IN 46323 with Rev. Charles A. Mosley officiating. Eugene will lie-in-state at the church from 9:30 AM until time of Mass. Burial at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schererville.
