GWENDOLYN ROSE BRANDT NIELSEN "DEDE"
age 92, of Griffith, formerly Hammond & Gary, passed away February 27, 2014 at the Highland Nursing & Rehab. She leaves behind two daughters: Barbara (Marty Walter) Slemin, of Griffith and Juanita (Jigger) Sirois, of VA; son Hank (Rosalee "Sis") Brandt, of Las Vegas; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by husbands Jacob Brandt and Kay Nielsen, son Roland Brandt, granddaughter Denise Slemin Dafcik, parents Joseph and Mamie Beck, one sister, four brothers and special friend William "Bill" Wallace.
Gwen is best remembered for her creativeness in her sewing, crafting, candy making, canning and baking. She has been a member of Woodmar United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She loved this church and volunteered in many different areas from babysitting in the nursery during Sunday services , to sewing bandages for Cancer Cupboard and Communion set-up and clean up, to name a few. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hammond and then in her later years, Griffith. Besides excelling in being a homemaker, Gwen worked at the IGA in Black Oak while raising her family and the Hessville 5 & 10 for many years before retiring.
Funeral services will be held on Monday March 3, 2014 at 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at Woodmar United Methodist Church 7320 Northcote Ave Hammond with Rec. Alex Stone officiating. Friends may visit with family at the church on Monday from 9:00 AM until time of service. Burial will be private. Gwen will be laid to rest in the Garden of the Apostles at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Schererville. In lieu of flowers donations to Woodmar United Methodist Church would be appreciated.
