Homer is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Maria; children: Joseph (Melissa) Layba, James Layba, Richard Layba and Jennifer (Steven) Baisley; 15 grandchildren: Veronica, Chris, Joe Jr, Cathy Jo, Francine, Michael, Jimmy, Dakota, Dameon, Ricky, Nicole, Isaiah, Elijah, Ian and Evangelina; 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter; his canine companion Pebbles and many dear friends and extended family. Homer was born in Tennessee, raised in the town of Briceville and graduated from Lake City High School Class of '64.  At age 18 Homer was drafted and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. After his military service, Homer went on to work for IHB Railroad as an operator and retired after 30 years of hard work and dedicated service. During retirement Homer was able to enjoy his passion for woodworking and crafted birdhouses, a bench for his granddaughter and many other things with his hands. An avid fisherman, Homer loved to spend time fishing on the Kankakee River. Homer was very family oriented and whether it was watching football on tv, one of his favorite pastimes, or cooking out, he absolutely cherished every minute spent with his loving family. Our husband, father and papa will be sorely missed, dearly remembered and carried forever in our hearts.
