Javier "Howard" Hernandez
age 94, of Hammond, formerly of Indiana Harbor, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025. He is survived by his loving children: Javier "Howard" (Estella) Hernandez, Marilyn (late, Ken) Stigall, Gregory Hernandez, Susan (Tom) Richardson, Steven (Mona) Hernandez, and Laura Hernandez; precious grandchildren: Serena, Belinda and Angelica Hernandez, Anthony Richardson, Ashley Guerrero, and Aaron Hernandez, David and Harrison Hernandez, Natalie Stigall, Jenna and Jeremy Richardson, Elizabeth and Anna Hernandez, and Christine Hernandez; and 18 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Evelyn (nee Robinson); sons, David (still living, Tammy) Hernandez and Christopher Hernandez; and parents, Merced and Guillerma (nee Barrientos) Hernandez.
Howard was a 1950 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School. He dedicated 35 years of service as a welder with Inland Steel, where he forged both strong metal and lifelong friendships. His co-workers described him as "Inland Tuff" and a great man!
An avid golfer, Howard found great joy on the fairways and was an active member of the Inland Golf League. He was also a supporter of youth baseball, sharing his time and wisdom as a coach for the Maywood Little League. When not involved with sports, he could be found tending to his garden.
Above all else, Howard was a dedicated family man, always putting his loved ones first. His kindness, hard work, and unwavering support, along with his quick wit, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 7109 Calumet Ave., HAMMOND, IN. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 PM.
