John A. Banka
age 68, of Hammond, IN, went home to be with the Lord, on Sunday, October 20, 2024. John is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Judy Banka; beloved daughter, Natalie Banka; many cherished brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and his loyal canine companion, Chico. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Banka; sister Karen Banka; and aunts Gertrude and Helen Lukowicz.
John graduated from Bishop Noll Institute and Purdue University. He retired from ArcelorMittal, where he worked for many years. He served in the National Guard, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. John was a devout Christian and active in the congregation at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Munster, Indiana, serving on the Board of Trustees and acting as captain of the dartball team. He was a member of the American Legion and Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR).
John loved spending time with his family and made friends whenever he went. He was also an enthusiastic dog owner who enjoyed taking his standard poodle, Chico, on frequent walks and adventures. He was exceptionally kind, generous, and patriotic, always ready to lend a hand, and regularly volunteered for many local events and charitable endeavors. As he often told his wife and daughter, "I'm a happy man."
John will be forever missed by his family, friends, church, and community.
