John X. Lopez, Sr.

John X. Lopez, of Hammond, a hero in every sense of the word, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving children: Lisa Marie Lopez, John X. Lopez, Jr. , Richard (Michelle) Lopez, Michael J. Lopez, Christopher (Teresa) Lopez, Pollyanna Lopez; ten precious grandchildren: Mike Vargo, John Vargo, Bridgette (Michael) Perez, Colin Lopez, Thomas (Sarah) Lopez, Vinny Lopez, Andrea (Abdiel) Naranjo, Vincent (Sam) Recinto, Samantha (Levi) McDonald, Dmitri Lopez; fifteen great grandchildren: Nyah, Nadiah, Noah, Emma, Lily, Madison, Drake, Lawson, Macy, Clark, Evan, Wesley, Raven, Robin, and Vanessa; siblings: Martha (late, George) Vasquez, Socorro (late, Jose) Solis, Gus (Kathy) Lopez, and Virginia Batello; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rebecca V.; and parents, John and Catalina Lopez.

John was a paratrooper with the Army and wore his Civil Air Patrol patch with honor. He exemplified bravery and sacrifice throughout his life. However, his most courageous act occurred during a camping trip, where he bravely rescued his son from a raging fire, risking his own life to ensure the safety of his loved ones.

John's love for the outdoors extended beyond his heroic deeds. An avid fisherman, Cub Scout leader, and pitching coach, he instilled in others a passion for exploration, teamwork, and perseverance.

John's creativity knew no bounds. Whether wielding a paintbrush or a toolbox, he approached each endeavor with passion and skill. His artistic talents illuminated the world, leaving behind a legacy of beauty and inspiration.

Above all, John cherished his family. He will be deeply missed by his devoted children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a multitude of friends and loved ones.

Friends may meet with the family from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, February 19, 2024 at Solan-Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy, Ave., Schererville, IN. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 20 DIRECTLY at St. John Bosco Church, 7113 Columbia Ave Hammond, IN with Fr. Jeffrey D. Burton officiating. Inurnment to follow at St. John St. Joseph Cemetery in Hammond, IN.
