Martha A. Nejak (nee Brozovich)

age 92, of Hammond, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 while holding her devoted daughter's hand.  Martha is survived by her loving children, Charles D. (Liz Mund) Nejak and Linda (Tim) Lilek. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles J. Nejak; and parents, Anton and Mara Brozovich.  Among the many loved ones welcoming her into heaven were her lifelong and loving friends, Rose Adams and Joann Saliga.

Martha was a devout Catholic and attended regular mass at St. John Bosco Church.

After 10 years of working for NIPSCO, she gave up her career to become a devoted mother and homemaker.  While most mothers at the time did not drive, Martha could have been the prototype for "Uber", driving all of the neighborhood children to school.

She lost her husband, the love of her life, after 42 years of marriage.  Their love for each other could only be described as extraordinary and eternal.  She held on to that love and embraced life.

Martha never turned down an opportunity to go on an adventure, whether it was her annual visits to California to see her son, her frequent visits to Whiting Park with her daughter, spur of the moment lunches in Michigan, eating lamb dinners at the Croation and Greek Picnics or even candy shopping.  She loved her sweets and everyone will miss her Rosky, Walnut Roll and Poppyseed Roll that she baked and shared yearly.  Her competitive side came out when she played bocce with her family.  She was an avid reader and loved to spend hours browsing through and picking out books from the library.

Martha was a Mother, Aunt and wonderful babysitter, and although she never became a grandparent, she was known as "Grandma Martha" to many. They all loved her for her humor, her humility, love of simple pleasures and the love they received.

In her final years of life, during her struggle with dementia, Martha found comfort in nurturing Emma ("Peanut") who was as real to her as any grandchild could ever be.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kenndy Ave., Schererville, IN.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2024 DIRECTLY at St. John Bosco Church, 7113 Columbia Ave., Hammond, IN with Fr. Jeffrey D. Burton officiating.  Martha will lie-in-state at the church from 9:30 AM until time of Mass.  Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery in Hammond, IN.
