Mary Skratsky (née Farkas)

Age 97, of Griffith, IN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 of natural causes. She is survived by her loving daughters, Mary Jo (Roger) Neely and Kim Skratsky, and her son Michael (Robin) Skratsky. She is also survived by four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three grand-dogs, and one grand-cat. Preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Joseph Skratsky; son Joseph J. Skratsky.

Born in Czechoslovakia, she began a remarkable journey when she immigrated to the United States with her father in 1934, carrying with her the promise of a new life and endless possibilities.

From an early age, her talents were impossible to overlook. Throughout school, her creativity flourished as she earned numerous writing awards, showcasing a gift for storytelling and expression. Yet she was equally drawn to the precision and logic of accounting and bookkeeping - a passion that would come full circle later in life. Balancing both creativity and discipline, she also proudly served as a majorette for her high school marching band, demonstrating the confidence and determination that would define her life.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, she pursued another dream by attending one of Chicago's premier cosmetology schools. There, she mastered the art and science of hair styling, treatments, and color, eventually opening her own home salon business. Her salon became more than a business - it was a place where artistry met personal connection. Through her skill, creativity, and genuine care for her clients, she helped people not only look their best but feel their best.

Never one to stop learning or embracing new opportunities, she began a new chapter in the 1980s when she joined a property management company. The role allowed her to reconnect with her lifelong love of accounting and bookkeeping, combining her sharp mind with decades of experience. Her work ethic was legendary, and while many would have long since retired, she continued doing what she loved well into her 80s. Her life is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the belief that it's never too late to pursue a passion. Whether expressing herself through writing, creating beauty behind the salon chair, or balancing the books with unwavering accuracy, she approached every chapter with dedication and heart. Her story is one of courage, hard work, and a lifelong commitment to using her many talents to make a difference in the lives of all those around her.

Above all, she will be fondly remembered as a devoted mother, a loyal friend and neighbor, and a kind soul. Her generosity touched many lives, leaving behind a legacy of love and selflessness that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. 

A private family service will be held to honor Mary’s life and the family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this time.
