June 13, 1953 Norm married the love of his life and beautiful bride Doris Blessing. Norm joined the 101 st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He went on to retire from Wonder Bread in 1990. Over the course of fifty years as they lived in Northwest Indiana before retiring down in the Sunshine State of Florida in The Villages, they began a deep rooted family tree together. This family tree began on the firm foundation of Norm and Doris' love for one another and over the course of the next sixty-five years has spread to thirty-five family members and counting. Our family along with many others that knew Norm have had the privilege to call him many different names such as husband, father, grandpa, friend, along with two of his favorite names "Poppy" and "Stormin Norman." To many, Poppy made it known that God and Family were his two main priorities in his life and we all were blessed be able to grow and learn through Poppy over the course of his life. Norm was a "Can Do" type of person who he inherited from his father. If one of his children or friends had an issue or problem with something, Norm would do everything he could to help. As they retired down in Florida Poppy and Nanny always made it a priority to make it back home for the holidays even if it were for just a few days so they could spend time with us. Poppy would also want to make sure we shared two of his other passions and love for golf and cooking. If Poppy wasn't at home or work more than likely he was out on the course with his sons or friends for hours laughing and playing the game he loved with the people he loved. His love for golf stayed with him his whole life as he golfed 9 holes with his wife and grandchildren at the age of 85. When thinking of Poppy and his ability to make amazing dishes our family will always reflect on the Sundays we would spend at his pool while he was grilling or cooking food. To people on the outside looking in, it may of seemed a little chaotic with all of us laughing and kids running around, but to Poppy it was what he dreamed of sharing when Doris married him. Poppy took great pride in one particular dish and that was his famous mac and cheese! This particular recipe will be something that lives on in our family and will be shared at family gatherings for many years to come just as Poppy would want it to.
As Norm began to get older he and Doris wanted to move back closer to family and be around the people he loved and cherished so deeply. As many of you know Norm was a fighter and he was determined to be around the ones he loved until he couldn't fight any longer. He made it clear to all of us in his final days that he wanted to make sure he had one last chance to say good bye. We are happy to share that poppy fought till the very end to accomplish just that, to be with his children and grandchildren one last time. Although this is a tragic and hard time for not only our family, but many of you who have been touched by Norm, this is a time of celebration for Norm's amazing life. Even though Norm is physically gone he still lives on through his beautiful bride, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. As we move on in life and continue to expand our family a piece of Norm will always be with us as we reminisce on all of the good times and hearing his contagious laugh in our minds. We can all be at peace knowing that he is pain free and with his Creator looking down on us. Poppy finally received the ultimate tee time and that tee time is with his life-long partner, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! We love you and will miss you Poppy!
