Olena (Helen) Szewciw
age 90 of Hammond, passed away Friday, November 25, 2016. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Wasyl (Bill) Szewciw. She is survived by her devoted sons, Walter (Anna) Schewciw and Orest (Kathleen) Szewciw; grandchildren, Alex (Nikki) Szewciw, Stephanie (Patrick) Yingling, Adam Szewciw, and Sonya (David) Weed; great grandchildren, Layla Szewciw, Evan Yingling, and Emma Weed; and many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives in Ukraine.
Visitation will take place Friday, December 2, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (Panachyda at 6:00 p.m.) at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home & Crematory, 14 Kennedy Ave. (corner of Main and Kennedy), Schererville. Helen will lie in state on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ridge Rd. and White Oak in Munster. Funeral Service will commence at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Hammond.
Helen was born in Molotkiw, Ukraine. She immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in Hammond with her husband and sons. She was a devoted member of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, Senior Altar and Rosary Society, and the Ukrainian National Association for many years. Helen loved preparing traditional meals for her family and friends. She was also an avid gardener. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, Baba, Great-Grandmother, sister, and friend.
