She was born the third child of four into a large farming family community in Northern Illinois, in which she was one of sixty-three first cousins. Her parents farmed corn and soybeans, and her mother trained and worked as a one-room country schoolteacher. Sue started her education in a one-room country schoolhouse herself and continued throughout her life with graduation from Northern Illinois Teacher's College in Dekalb, IL. She later earned a master's degree and Special Reading Endorsement. She taught for nearly twenty years in the Hammond School system teaching hundreds of children to read. She gave particular attention to those children who struggled, even creating games to help them learn in different ways.
She married Bob, her college sweetheart, following his return from World War II where he served in the Army Air Corps stationed in the South Pacific. Together they raised a family in Hammond and were active in starting their church at St. John Bosco. Sue's great faith was a mainstay in her life.
During Sue's life, she experienced the great depression, the coming of television to their farmhouse. After just hearing stories about the Wright brothers, she traveled by plane internationally. She saw men land on the Moon and watched as telephone multi-party lines evolved into smart phones. Encyclopedias became GOOGLE that she used to assist her in her love of word games.
Sue was a wonderful neighbor wherever she lived. She was active in church, helped with scouts, and with Bob's work with St. Vincent DePaul. She also made many loving friends after moving into her condo in Clarendale. Those friends helped her celebrate her 100th birthday in style.
Sue took joy in the simple and wonderful life she knew. She guided her family with love, acceptance and understanding. She cherished her friends in every chapter of her life. She was blessed, and she shared her blessings widely.
