Susan Olszewski (nee Hintz)
Age 73, of Schererville, IN, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Susan is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Richard; children, Kimberly (Justin) Tobias and Leigh (Lisa) Olszewski; precious grandchildren: Cora, Hank, and Jack Tobias, and Oliver and Fallon Olszewski; sisters, Elizabeth Kurtz and Linell Redden; aunt, Linda Vaughn; in-laws, James (Lynn) Olszewski and Jan Baron, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Hintz and Margaret Koeberl; and brother, Thomas (survived by Lou Ann) Hintz.
Sue was raised in the western suburbs of Chicago. After graduating from Proviso West High School, she pursued her Bachelor of Arts degree at Clarke University (formerly Clarke College) in Dubuque, Iowa. It was there that she met and fell in love with her husband of 49 years, Rich, who attended Loras College in the same city.
While studying abroad in Germany, Sue realized her real calling in life was to explore the world and share the gift of travel with others. She moved to New York City and spent several years as an international flight attendant for Pan Am. After accepting a proposal from Rich on top of the Empire State Building, they married and established their life in Northwest Indiana, residing first in Highland then Schererville, and welcoming two children, Kim and Leigh.
Sue spent her adult life as a loving mother, grandmother, traveler, and longtime travel agent for Hilbrich Holidays Travel. She frequently visited Europe and Mexico, and especially loved river cruises and beach trips with friends. Through her job as a travel agent, she booked hundreds of trips for family and friends, tirelessly working to plan the best trips possible, with a painstaking level of detail (and stress). It always brought her tremendous joy to listen to successful trip recaps from her clients.
Sue was also an avid animal-lover. She could not resist feeding stray cats from her back deck, slowly winning them over, and then adopting them into her family. She always enjoyed watching the wildlife in her beautiful backyard, where she took immense pride in her gardening and landscaping.
Sue cherished her family and friends. She spoiled her grandchildren with sweets and loved being a spectator at their various activities and sporting events. The Indiana Dunes was a favorite local spot that she loved visiting to swim and catch up on gossip with her friends. She was a bright light in our lives and will be deeply missed.
