Thomas Ray Crowel
Age 84, of Highland, IN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy J. Crowel (nee Phares); sons, Thomas G. (Vicki) Crowel and Robert R. (fiancé Jennifer Jabczynski) Crowel; grandchildren: Tommy and Jonny Crowel and Kenna, Ella, and Anna Crowel. Preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Delphia Crowel; brother, Larry Crowel and sister, Marjorie Wells.
Tom grew up in Hammond, IN and his journey through life was marked by remarkable achievements and a deep love for his community. After graduating with his bachelor's degree from Purdue University, he pursued further education and earned his master's degree from Valparaiso University. He was also enlisted in the United States Air Force.
Tom's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Crowel Agency in 1964 with locations in Highland, Merrillville, and Michigan City, IN. He was not only a successful business owner but also a civic leader who served on the Highland Town Council from 1968-1972. His exceptional contributions did not go unnoticed, as he was honored with the prestigious Sagamore of Wabash award by the governor. Tom was a member of the McKinley Masonic Lodge #712 in Schererville, IN as well as the Orak Shrine in Michigan City, IN.
Outside of his professional achievements, Tom was a man of diverse interests and hobbies. He was an avid bass fisherman and a prolific reader. Later in life, he embraced his creative side and authored several books, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom for generations to come.
A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Avenue, Schererville, IN. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Humane Indiana: https://humaneindiana.org/donate
