Verna Hoosier (nee German)
Age 88, of Hammond, IN was called by the Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Verna is survived by her loving children, Teresa (the late, Nicholas) Schweihs, Linda (the late, Anthony) Rodgers, and Jane (Anthony) Rios; precious grandchildren, Samantha, Scott, Adam (Cristina), Aimee (Cory), Nick, Jeff, Aaron, Kimberly (Rt), Nicole, Anita (Tyee), Angelina (Mario); 19 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Mamie Wideman and Faye Busby; and brother Claude German.
She was preceded in death by loving husband of 32 years, Ralph Hoosier; her parents William German and Flora Mae German (nee Markham); her children Donald Fulton, Debra Fulton, and Michael Fulton; her granddaughters Georgia and Jennie; and her siblings, Cicle, David, Evelyn, and John.
Verna was born and raised in Alabama, where she grew up working on the family farm. In 1966, she moved to Chicago before eventually making Hammond her home in 1974. Verna was a very hardworking woman who often held multiple jobs throughout her life. Her favorite work, however, was being a caretaker and looking after children, something that came naturally to her because of her love for kids.
Above all, Verna cherished her family. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She had a special gift for finding the good in everyone and touched many lives with her kindness and caring heart. Outside of her family, one of Verna's greatest joys was gardening. She also enjoyed redecorating her home and had a particular obsession with buying new towels! These little things brought her happiness and were just a few of the many things that made Verna uniquely herself.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 13, 2026 at 12:00PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home , 7109 Calumet Ave., Hammond, IN with Pastor Brian Shaver officiating.
